A marae (pronounced mah-rye) is a special meeting place for Māori people in New Zealand. It's a bit like a community center, but with deep cultural meaning. It usually includes a meeting house (called a wharenui), a dining hall, and a courtyard. Marae are important places for gatherings, celebrations, and discussions.

In October 2020, the New Zealand Government helped out by giving $248,376 from a special fund called the Provincial Growth Fund. This money was used to upgrade two marae in the West Coast region. The goal was to make these marae even better and to create about 20 jobs for people in the area.

Marae in Buller District

The Buller District is home to one important marae:

  • Te Taha o Te Awa is located in Westport. Its meeting house is also called Te Taha o Te Awa. This marae belongs to the Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō iwi, specifically the Pūaha Te Rangi hapū.

Marae in Westland District

The Westland District has two important marae:

  • Arahura Marae is located in Hokitika. Its meeting house is called Tūhuru. This marae belongs to the Ngāi Tahu iwi, specifically the Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae hapū.
  • Te Tauraka Waka a Māui is located in Bruce Bay. Its meeting house is called Kaipō. This marae belongs to the Ngāi Tahu iwi, specifically the Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio hapū.
