How Perth's Leadership Began
In 1837, a new law was made to help manage the roads and streets in Western Australia. A group of trustees, including local Justices of the Peace and landowners, were put in charge.
This law was changed in 1842. After that, people could vote for their leaders. The first elected Chairman and committee started their work on 8 February 1842. They included:
- Walter Boyd Andrews (Chairman)
- George Leake, James Purkis, Peter Broun, W. H. Drake, Richard Jones (committee members)
- James Purkis was also chosen as the treasurer.
In 1856, Perth officially became a city. This happened when the first Anglican Bishop of Perth, Matthew Blagden Hale, was appointed.
The leader of the Council was called "Chairman" from 1858 to 1880. From 1880 to 1929, the leader was called the "Mayor". Since 1929, the Mayor has been given the special title of "Lord Mayor".
