How Albuquerque's Mayors Started
Henry N. Jaffa was the very first mayor of Albuquerque, elected way back in 1885. The city had a mayor in charge until 1917. At that time, Albuquerque changed its government to a "City Commission" system. This meant the main leader was called the Chairman of the City Commission.
But Albuquerque grew a lot! By 1975, the city decided to change its government again. Voters chose to switch from the commission system to a city council system. With this new system, people once again elected a mayor to lead the city.
What Does the Mayor Do?
Albuquerque has a "strong mayor" government. This means the mayor is the main leader and manager of the city. The mayor gets to choose people for different jobs in the city government. They also have to suggest a budget each year, which is like a spending plan for the city.
Most of the mayor's choices and plans need to be approved by the Albuquerque City Council. But the mayor has a special power: they can say "yes" or "no" (veto) to laws the City Council passes. The mayor's office usually has a team, including a chief of staff, a deputy chief of staff, and a communications director, to help them run things.
