This group was first called 'The Incorporation of Surgeons and Barbers of Edinburgh'. Later, in 1778, King George III gave them a special "royal charter." This meant they became "The Royal College of Surgeons of the City of Edinburgh." Before 1778, the person leading the group was called a "deacon."
Today, the president of the College is usually chosen in November and serves for three years. The current president is Professor Rowan Parks.
