The Provost's Role: A Look Back

The job of provost in Perth is very old. It might have started way back in 1210. This was when the Merchant Guild of Perth received its special permission to operate. The first provost we know by name was John Mercer. He served in 1368.

For a long time, until 1975, the leader was called the Lord Provost of Perth. This was a very important title. It was second only to the Lord Provost of Edinburgh in Scotland.

In 1975, local government in Scotland changed. After this, the role became the Provost of Perth and Kinross. This means the provost now represents a wider area, not just the city of Perth.
