Welcome to a list of the tallest buildings and structures in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. This list focuses on buildings and structures only within Newcastle. It does not include those in nearby Gateshead. We're looking at structures that are taller than 45 meters (about 148 feet).
Compared to some other big cities in the UK, Newcastle upon Tyne doesn't have a huge number of very tall buildings. Most of the tall ones you see are apartment blocks built in the middle of the 1900s.
For a long time, the tallest building in Newcastle was St Nicholas' Cathedral. It was finished way back in 1448! It held this title for 396 years. Then, in 1844, St Mary's Cathedral became the tallest, just a little bit taller. St Mary's Cathedral was the city's tallest for 122 years.
In 1966, a modern building called Shieldfield House finally became taller than both cathedrals. But it only held the record for two years! In 1968, Vale House, which has 28 floors, was completed and became the new tallest. More recently, in 2017, plans were approved for a new residential building called Hadrian's Tower. It's 82 meters (269 feet) tall and was finished in 2020, becoming the very newest tallest building in Newcastle.
