History and Future Plans
For a long time, Salford Cathedral was the tallest building in Salford. It was built in 1848 and stood at 73 meters (about 240 feet) for 118 years!
In the 1960s and 1970s, Salford started building many tall buildings. These were mostly apartment blocks in areas like Pendleton. They were built to house many people as industries changed. In 1966, the City Central tower, at 80 meters (about 262 feet), became the city's tallest building.
Not many tall buildings were planned in the 1980s and 1990s. But in the last 20 years, there's been a new interest in skyscrapers in Salford. Some very tall buildings were planned, like the 179-meter (about 587 feet) Greengate Tower. However, these plans didn't happen because of money problems in 2008.
Unlike many big cities, Salford doesn't have strict rules about how tall buildings can be. This means developers can build very high. MediaCityUK in Salford Quays has been a big area for new buildings. Over the last 10 years, many mid-sized towers have been built there. These include Blue, MediaCityUK (90 meters or 295 feet), and the X1 Media City towers (85 meters or 277 feet each).
Looking ahead to the 2020s, Salford Quays will keep growing. New groups of towers are planned for Cotton Quay and the second phase of X1 Media City. Cotton Quay will have six towers over 50 meters (about 164 feet). The tallest will be Tower One, at 158 meters (about 518 feet). This will make it the second-tallest building in Salford. The X1 development will add five more towers, with three over 100 meters. The tallest will be 125 meters (about 410 feet). If all these plans happen, Salford Quays will have one skyscraper over 150 meters (about 492 feet) and five more buildings over 100 meters.
The Greengate area is another important place for new buildings. It's close to Manchester city center. In 2018, the Anaconda Cut, at 130 meters (about 427 feet), became the tallest building in Salford. It was the first building in Salford to reach over 100 meters.
If all future plans come true, Greengate will have two skyscrapers over 150 meters and six more buildings over 100 meters. A big project called Waterloo Place is planned to be 173 meters (about 568 feet) tall. It will be the second-tallest in Salford and one of the tallest outside London.
Waterloo Place will be near Anaconda Cut. It will also be joined by the three Greengate Park North towers, with the tallest reaching 155 meters (about 508 feet). With buildings like Affinity Living Riverview (110 meters or 360 feet) and others, Greengate will have many tall towers close together.
If all the planned buildings are built, Salford could have 100 buildings over 50 meters tall. It could also have 14 buildings over 100 meters and four skyscrapers over 150 meters. When you combine this with Manchester city center, the area will have over 60 buildings taller than 100 meters. This is the most in the UK outside of London!
Tallest Buildings and Structures
