List of tallest buildings in Norfolk, Virginia facts for kids
Norfolk, Virginia, has a cool skyline filled with tall buildings! The story of these high-rises started way back in the early 1900s. One of the first big ones was the 12-story Royster Building, built in 1912.
For many years, the buildings in Downtown Norfolk weren't super tall. But that changed in the 1960s. In 1967, the 23-story Bank of America Center was built. This building was a really big deal! It was the tallest building in all of Virginia until 1971. Even today, it's still one of the tallest buildings in Norfolk.

New Heights in the 1980s
In 1987, the Dominion Tower became the new tallest building in Norfolk. It has 26 stories and stands proudly along the Elizabeth River. This area was getting a fresh new look around that time. The Dominion Tower was also the tallest building in the whole Hampton Roads area until 2002. That's when the Armada Hoffler Tower was finished in nearby Virginia Beach.
Most of the famous buildings you see in Norfolk's downtown skyline today were built between the late 1980s and now. One of the newer ones is the 23-story Wells Fargo Center, which opened in 2010.
Some even taller buildings were planned for downtown in the late 2000s. However, these plans got put on hold because of money problems around the world. For example, the Granby Tower was planned to be 31 stories tall, which would have made it the tallest! Another project, the Westin Hotel, was going to be 26 stories. But don't worry, a new big hotel project called The Main started construction in May 2014. It includes a 23-story Hilton hotel and a conference center. This new building took the place of the planned Westin.
