Lisvane Reservoir is a large, man-made lake located in Lisvane, near Cardiff in south Wales. It is one of several reservoirs built to supply fresh water to the city of Cardiff. The reservoir was completed in 1886.

It sits right next to another reservoir called Llanishen Reservoir. Both reservoirs are part of a green area known as the Nant Fawr Corridor. This corridor stretches from the top of Roath Park into the countryside beyond Cyncoed.

Building the Reservoir

Lisvane Reservoir was built as part of a big project called the Taff Fawr scheme. This project aimed to provide enough water for the growing city of Cardiff. The reservoir was finished in 1886, making it an important part of Cardiff's water system for over a century.

How Much Water Does it Hold?

These reservoirs can hold a lot of water! In 1892, it was reported that Llanishen Reservoir could hold about 300 million imperial gallons of water. The smaller Lisvane Reservoir was able to hold about 80 million imperial gallons. That's enough water to fill many, many swimming pools!

Who Owns the Reservoir?

Over the years, the ownership of Lisvane Reservoir has changed a few times.

In 2013, a company called CELSA Group bought both Llanishen and Lisvane reservoirs. They needed a steady supply of water for their steel rod mill plant in Cardiff.

Then, in 2016, Welsh Water took over both reservoirs. They got a very long lease, lasting 999 years! This means Welsh Water can use the reservoirs to supply water to homes and for fun activities like fishing. CELSA UK can still get the water they need from Lisvane Reservoir.

A Special Place for Nature

Lisvane Reservoir is not just important for water supply; it's also a special place for nature. It is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This means the area has important plants, animals, or geological features that need to be looked after. Being an SSSI helps protect the wildlife and natural beauty around the reservoir.
