Discover Little Mangere Island
Little Mangere Island is quite small, covering less than 15 hectares (37 acres). It has a flat area in the middle, but it is surrounded by very steep cliffs. The highest point on the island is 214 meters (702 feet) above the sea.
A Home for Amazing Wildlife
Little Mangere Island is privately owned. It played a very important role in saving a special bird called the Black robin. For a while, Little Mangere was the last place where these few remaining black robins lived.
In the early 1980s, these precious birds were moved to nearby Mangere Island and South East Island. This move was part of a big plan to help the species survive and grow. Today, Little Mangere Island is still home to the largest group of sooty shearwaters (a type of seabird) in the Chatham Islands.
