The Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged is a historic building in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was built by a kind group called the Little Sisters of the Poor. This group helps elderly people who need a place to live and care.
The Sisters came to Minneapolis in 1889. They wanted to create a safe home for older adults. The building was designed to be a comfortable place for many people.
About the Building
Early Days and Design
The first part of the building was finished in 1895. It was designed by an architect named Frederick Corser. This first section was a three-and-a-half-story building. It also had a special chapel attached to it.
Corser made sure the building looked grand and balanced. He focused on its size and shape. He did not add a lot of fancy decorations.
Growing Bigger
The home quickly became very popular. More space was needed for the elderly residents. So, in 1905, Frederick Corser designed an east wing. This new part matched the original building's style.
Even more space was added in 1914. A west wing was built this time. Architects Frederick Kees and Serenus Colburn designed it. They also made sure it looked just like the rest of the building.
A New Purpose
The Little Sisters of the Poor and the residents moved in 1977. They found a new, modern building in Saint Paul. The old building was then given a new life.
It is located on Broadway Street Northeast. The building was changed into a large apartment complex. It now has 71 apartments for people to live in. In 1978, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical site.
