Penstemon procerus, also called the littleflower penstemon, is a beautiful wild plant. It belongs to a group of flowers known as penstemons. This plant grows naturally across a large part of western North America. You can find it from Alaska all the way down to California and Colorado. In Canada, it grows as far east as Manitoba.

Littleflower penstemon loves mountain areas. It often grows in meadows and high-altitude places where the weather is cool. This plant is a perennial, meaning it lives for more than two years. It's also herbaceous, which means it has soft stems, not woody ones like trees.

What Does it Look Like?

The littleflower penstemon often forms a mat of leaves and stems. Some of its stems can stand up straight, reaching about 40 centimeters (about 16 inches) tall.

Different Types of Penstemon

There are several different kinds, or varieties, of this plant. They can look a bit different from each other. Some varieties spread out more along the ground. These are sometimes called "pincushion penstemons" because they look like little plant cushions.

Leaves and Flowers

The leaves of Penstemon procerus are usually shaped like a spear or an oval. Many leaves grow near the bottom of the plant. Smaller leaves grow in pairs along the stems.

The flowers grow in clusters. Each flower is shaped like a tiny tube, less than one centimeter long. They are usually purple or blue, often with a white spot inside. The outside of the flower is smooth, but the inside might have tiny white or yellowish hairs.

Why is it Called Procerus?

The second part of the plant's scientific name, procerus, comes from Latin. It means "tall." This might seem a bit funny since the plant is called "littleflower penstemon" and isn't super tall.

Growing in Gardens

Some people like to grow Penstemon procerus in their gardens. A special type, called 'Roy Davidson', is very popular in the UK. It even won an award called the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. This means it's a great plant for gardens.

If you want to grow it, 'Roy Davidson' can handle different conditions. But it needs soil that drains water well. It also likes to grow in sunny spots or places with some shade.
