Littleton is a small, unincorporated community located in Buchanan County, Iowa, in the United States. It's found northwest of a larger town called Independence. Being "unincorporated" means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's managed by the county. In 1960, Littleton had about 250 people living there.
History of Littleton
Littleton was first planned out, or "platted," in 1855 by a person named Moses Little. Right next to it, another community called Chatham was platted by Dr. Robert W. Wright. Littleton is in a part of the county known as Section 9 of Perry Township, and Chatham is just across the way in Section 10.
A post office was set up in the area in 1851. Later, in the 1880s, it officially became known as the Littleton post office. By 1902, Littleton had a population of 88 people.
Even though Littleton started with a lot of promise, it never grew big enough to become an official town with its own government. It has stayed a small community on a road between Independence and Jesup.
Littleton and Chatham Historical Society
Many people who live in the area might not even realize they are part of the historic Chatham community. However, more people are learning about its past thanks to the efforts of the Littleton and Chatham Historical Society (LCHS). This group was started in 2007. In 2014, they took over the old Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, which helps them share the history of both Littleton and Chatham. You can learn more about their work on their website Littleton and Chatham Historical Society.
