Liv Dommersnes (born Strømsted; 28 September 1922 – 6 April 2014) was a talented Norwegian actress. She was also famous for reciting poetry. Liv was one of the people who helped start Studioteatret in 1945. This was a very important theatre group.

Early Life and Family

Liv Strømsted was born in Kristiania, Norway. This city is known as Oslo today. Her father was Jørgen Andreas Strømsted. He worked as a storekeeper. Her mother was Signe Beatrice Hansen.

Liv Dommersnes was married twice. Her first husband was the actor Jens Bolling. They were married from 1945 to 1952. Later, she married Ivar Dommersnes, a doctor. They were together from 1968 until his death in 1994.

Her Acting Journey

Liv Dommersnes began her acting career in 1942. Her first role was "Helga" in a play by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. This play was called Geografi og kjærlighed. She performed at the National Theatre in Oslo.

She worked at the National Theatre from 1941 to 1945. She returned there in 1949.

Starting a New Theatre

During World War II, Norway was under German occupation. The theatres faced many challenges. The authorities tried to control what was shown. Many people boycotted the theatres.

Liv Strømsted joined a secret group of actors. They met in secret to study acting methods. These meetings led to the creation of Studioteatret in 1945. This was a very special theatre.

She acted for Studioteatret from 1945 to 1949. She played many different characters. Some of her roles included "Emily" in Our Town. She was also "Polly" in The Beggar's Opera. Another role was "Natasja" in A Marriage Proposal.

Famous Roles and Other Work

Liv Dommersnes was well-known for playing characters from Henrik Ibsen's plays. One of her most important roles was "Nora" in A Doll's House. She played Nora at different theatres. These included Rogaland Teater and Riksteatret. She also played Nora for Radioteatret and the National Theatre.

She also acted in movies. These included Andrine og Kjell (1951) and Blodveien (1955). Liv Dommersnes was also a regular on radio. She took part in almost 100 productions for Radioteatret.

Poetry and Later Years

From 1965, Liv Dommersnes started a new path. She became a reciter of poetry. She performed all over Scandinavia. Sometimes she performed alone, and sometimes with musicians. Many of her poetry shows were broadcast on radio or television.

In January 1992, the National Theatre celebrated her 50th anniversary as an actor. In 2001, she wrote her autobiography. It was titled Alt har sin tid. This means "Everything has its time".

Liv Dommersnes was an honorary member of several groups. These included The Association of Artists. She was also a member of the Norwegian Actors' Equity Association. She was also part of the Norwegian Academy for Language and Literature.

Awards and Recognition

Liv Dommersnes received many awards for her work.

  • In 1985, she won Oslo City's Artist's award.
  • In 1999, she received the Herman Wildenvey Poetry Award.
  • In 2001, she got the honorary prize from Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation's Radioteatret.
  • In 2000, she was honored as a Knight, First Class of the Order of St. Olav. This is a very high honor in Norway.
  • Also in 2000, she won the Anders Jahres Cultural Prize.

Passing Away

Liv Dommersnes passed away on 6 April 2014. She was 91 years old.
