Lizana is a small community in Harrison County, Mississippi. It's not a city, but a "community without its own government." You can find Lizana about 9.8 miles (15.8 km) southwest of Saucier, right along Mississippi Highway 53. Lizana is also part of the larger Gulfport-Biloxi metropolitan area, which means it's connected to the bigger cities nearby.

History of Lizana

Early Settlement

Lizana was settled in the 1880s. A man named Henry Sabastian Lizana moved there. He came from a nearby place called DeLisle. Henry was an entrepreneur, meaning he was good at starting businesses.

The area around Lizana had a big lumber boom. This meant lots of trees were being cut down for wood. This helped Henry's businesses become successful.

Businesses and Post Office

Henry Lizana opened a general store. He also started a post office. These were located near a railroad line. This railroad was used to transport logs.

In the early 1920s, the logging industry slowed down. Henry gave some of his land to his nine children. The rest of his land went to the state because of unpaid taxes.

St. Ann Catholic Church

In 1901, a priest named Father Rene Sorin helped build the first Catholic church in Lizana. It was called St. Ann Catholic Church. Henry Lizana donated the land for this church.

Over time, the church building needed repairs. In 1937, the church was moved. It is now located on Mississippi Highway 53.

Logging Railroads

From 1902 to 1906, the Gulf Coast Lumber Company ran train lines in Lizana. These lines were built for a special purpose. They carried valuable long leaf pine trees. These trees were logged in the Lizana area.

The logs were taken to a sawmill. This sawmill was in a nearby town called Lyman. In 1906, the Ingram-Day Lumber Company bought Gulf Coast Lumber. Later, Batson & Hatten Lumber Company bought Ingram-Day. This happened on May 10, 1924. Batson & Hatten stopped using the Lyman mill in 1932.

Lizana Post Office

The Lizana post office opened on August 7, 1908. Henry L. Lizana was the first postmaster. However, the post office closed on December 31, 1920. After that, mail for Lizana went to Saucier.
