Lyman is part of the larger Gulfport and Biloxi metropolitan area. In 2020, about 2,372 people lived there.
History of Lyman
Lyman has a simple but interesting past. Years ago, it was a busy little place. It had an office for sending express mail, which was a fast way to send letters and packages.
There was also a saw mill in Lyman. A saw mill is a place where logs are cut into lumber. This lumber was used to build homes and other structures. The Gulf Coast Lumber Company and Ingram-Day Lumber Company were both located here.
Lyman is also located on the Kansas City Southern Railway. This railway helped transport goods and people. A post office served the community from 1901 until 1974.
For many years, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service ran a fish hatchery in Lyman. A fish hatchery is a place where fish are bred and raised. This helped to keep fish populations healthy. In 1973, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks took over running the station.
