Lizard, also known as The Lizard or Lizard Village, is a small village located on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall, England. It is about 10 miles (16 km) south of Helston. This makes Lizard the most southerly settlement in mainland Britain!
Lizard is a popular place for tourists. Its large village green is surrounded by many cafes and gift shops where visitors can relax and buy souvenirs.
The name "Lizard" comes from the Cornish words Lis, meaning 'place', and Ard, meaning 'high'. The village is part of the civil parish of Landewednack, which is the most southerly parish on the British mainland.

History of Lizard
The village of Lizard has a long history. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, which was a big survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror. At that time, Lizard was a fairly small settlement.
An important event in history happened near Lizard in 1588. The Spanish Armada, a huge fleet of Spanish ships, was first spotted from this area. This was a very significant moment in English history!
Important Places in Lizard
St Winwallow's Church
The local church in Lizard is dedicated to St Winwallow. It is the most southerly church in mainland Britain. The church is built from a special local stone called Serpentinite, which comes from the unique rocks of the Lizard peninsula. You can find this church in the small area of Landewednack, which is now part of Lizard village.
Lizard Lighthouse
About half a mile (800 meters) south of the village is Lizard Lighthouse. This is the oldest working lighthouse on the Cornish mainland. It has two tall towers and was built in 1752. However, there was a light here even earlier, since 1619, to help guide ships safely past the dangerous coastline.
The Lizard Lifeboat Station
The RNLI operates The Lizard Lifeboat Station. It is located at Kilcobben Cove, about half a mile (800 meters) east of the village. The brave crews here help rescue people and boats in trouble at sea.
The Cornish Cross
In the village, you can also see a Cornish cross. These ancient stone crosses are an important part of Cornwall's history and culture.
