What's in a Name?
The name Llanover comes from an older Welsh name, Llanfyfor. This name is made up of two parts:
- Llan means 'enclosure' or 'church'.
- Myfor is a personal name.
So, Llanover essentially means 'Myfor's church enclosure'.
Where is Llanover?
Llanover is about four miles south of a town called Abergavenny. You can find it just off the A4042 road, which leads to Pontypool. The area around Llanover also includes several smaller places. These are tiny villages or groups of houses called hamlets. Some of these hamlets are Llanfair Kilgeddin, Llanvihangel Gobion, Llanddewi Rhydderch, and The Bryn.
A Look at Llanover's Past
Llanover is known as an estate village. This means it grew up around a large country estate and was often owned by one family. The Hall family was very important to Llanover.
Lady Llanover's Influence
Augusta, also known as Lady Llanover, lived in this area her whole life. She had a big impact on the village and the Llanover House estate. The estate is still privately owned today. Her husband, Sir Benjamin Hall, became a Baron. This is a special title given by the King or Queen.
Lady Llanover and her sisters, Frances and Emily, grew up here. They were taught by their mother, Georgina Mary Ann. Augusta and Frances later inherited the estate from their father, Benjamin Waddington.
Llanover House and Gardens
The original Llanover House was taken down in 1936. However, the beautiful park and gardens around where the house once stood are still mostly there. These gardens are very special and are listed as a Grade II* historic park. This means they are considered very important to Wales's history and beauty.

St Bartholomew's Church, Llanover is a very old and important building in the village. It is also a Grade II* listed building. This means it has special historical or architectural importance.
The River Usk flows very close to Llanover. To the west, you can find the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal. This canal is a lovely place for boating and enjoying nature.
Famous Connections
Llanover is also the birthplace of Penelope Fillon. She is well-known as the wife of François Fillon, who used to be the Prime Minister of France. He was also a candidate in the French presidential elections in 2017.
