Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Llibre del Repartiment (pronounced: LEE-bray del reh-par-tee-MENT) is a very old and important record book from the island of Majorca. It's like a detailed list of properties that were given away after a big event: the conquest of Majorca in 1229. This book carefully recorded all the houses and land that King James I gave to the Aragonese and Catalan nobles. It also listed properties for everyone else who helped in the fight to take over Majorca. These properties had been taken from the Muslims who lived on the island before the conquest.

This special book is kept safe in a place called "l'Arxiu del Regne de Mallorca" (which means the Archive of the Kingdom of Majorca) in the city of Palma. It actually has two parts! One part is written in two languages: Latin and Arabic. The other part is written in Catalan.

Who Helped in the Conquest?

Many different groups helped King James I conquer Majorca. The records in the Llibre del Repartiment show which cities and groups sent the most help.

Cities and Their Contributions

The cities that played the biggest part in the conquest were Barcelona and Marseille.

  • Barcelona sent a huge number of fighters, with a total of 877 horses.
  • Marseille also sent many, with 636 horses.

Knights Templar's Role

After these two cities, the Knights Templar were a very important group. They were a famous order of knights, and they contributed 525 horses to the conquest. Their help was crucial in the success of the campaign.
