Lloyd Perry Casner (born August 30, 1928, in Miami, Florida – died April 10, 1965, in Le Mans, France) was an American race car driver. He was also the person who started the Casner Motor Racing Division team.
Lloyd, often called "Lucky," was an airline pilot. He became very interested in a special race car called the Maserati Birdcage. Because of this interest, he decided to create his own racing team. His goal was to compete in the famous 1960 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
A Racing Champion
In August 1960, a car from Casner's team, called Team Camoradi, won a big race. This was the 1000 km of Nurburgring. Famous drivers Stirling Moss and Dan Gurney were driving the Maserati Birdcage car.
Lloyd Casner himself also won the 1961 1000km Nürburgring race. He shared the driving with Masten Gregory for Team Camoradi. Even though he won this important race, he never managed to win the Le Mans race.
His Final Race
Sadly, Lloyd Casner passed away during a testing session. He was testing a new Maserati car for the upcoming 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans race when an accident occurred.
Lloyd Casner also took part in two Formula One races. These were not part of the main championship. He appeared in the 1961 Glover Trophy and the 1961 Solitude Grand Prix. He was even featured in a movie about racing called The Green Helmet in 1961.
