About David Lloyd George
David Lloyd George was a very important person in British history. He was born in Manchester, England, but grew up in Wales. He became a lawyer and then a politician. As Prime Minister, he led Britain during the final years of World War I. He also helped shape the peace after the war.
The Museum's Story
The idea for the Lloyd George Museum started in 1948. This was three years after David Lloyd George passed away. The Lloyd George Museum Trust was set up to create it. Ann Parry was the first person to look after the museum's collections.
The main part of the museum opened in 1960. Lloyd George's wife, Countess Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, was there for the opening. A famous architect named Clough Williams-Ellis designed the building. The museum was made bigger and updated in 1990. Lord Callaghan, who was also a former Prime Minister, opened the new section.
Lloyd George's Childhood Home
The museum also includes a house called Highgate. This was David Lloyd George's childhood home. It has been set up to look just like it did in the late 1800s. His family was quite poor after his father died.
They could only live in Highgate because of his uncle, Richard Lloyd. Richard was a shoemaker and a clergyman. He was very kind and helped the family. David's grandmother also lived with them in the house.
What You Can See at the Museum
The museum has many interesting items from Lloyd George's life. One important item is his draft copy of the Conditions of Peace at Versailles. These were the rules for peace after World War I.
You can also see old documents and photographs. There are also "deeds of freedom" on display. A special coin called "Lloyd George's Crown" is also there. This coin represents the first old age pension ever paid in Wales. It shows how he helped ordinary people.
