Playing for the Trail Blazers
In his first year, the 1972–73 NBA season, Lloyd Neal had an amazing start. He averaged 13.4 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. This is called a "double-double" because he got double-digit numbers in two different statistics (points and rebounds). He was also named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1973. This means he was one of the best new players in the league that year.
One of the most exciting parts of his career was winning the NBA Championship with the Trail Blazers in 1977. This was a huge achievement for the team and for Lloyd.
Career Highlights and Retirement
Lloyd Neal's basketball career ended in 1979 because of a knee injury. After he stopped playing, the Portland Trail Blazers honored him by retiring his jersey number, 36. When a team retires a jersey number, it means no other player on that team will ever wear that number again. It is a very special way to remember a player's contributions.
After his basketball career, Lloyd Neal went back to college and finished his degree in 1980. He then had a long career working for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in Portland.
