Lloyd Daniel Pierce, born on May 11, 1976, is an American basketball coach. He is currently the lead assistant coach for the Indiana Pacers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before joining the Pacers, he coached for several other NBA teams. These include the Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Golden State Warriors. He also served as a head coach for the Atlanta Hawks. Besides coaching, Pierce also played basketball professionally in different countries.

Playing Basketball
High School and College Years
Lloyd Pierce started playing varsity basketball at Yerba Buena High School in 1990. He was known for his strong defense. Many people thought he was one of the best players ever from the San Jose area. His talent earned him a full scholarship to play basketball at Santa Clara University.
At Santa Clara, Pierce played alongside future NBA stars like Steve Nash. The Santa Clara Broncos basketball team made it to the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament three times. This happened between 1993 and 1996. Pierce helped the Broncos reach the NCAA tournament in 1995 and 1996. In 1996, they even made it to the second round. He was recognized as an honorable mention for the all-West Coast Conference team. During his college career, he averaged about 7.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.0 steal per game.
Professional Playing Career
After college, Pierce played professional basketball for four seasons. He played in different countries, including Mexico, Australia, Germany, and Turkey.
Coaching Basketball
Starting at Santa Clara University
Pierce began his coaching journey at Santa Clara University. In the 2002–03 season, he volunteered as the director of basketball operations. He worked with coach Dick Davey until 2007. Later, in 2016, he was considered for the head coaching job at Santa Clara University.
Coaching in the NBA
Cleveland Cavaliers
From 2007 to 2010, Pierce worked for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was the coordinator for player development. This means he helped players improve their skills.
Golden State Warriors
During the 2010–11 season, Pierce was an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors. He worked under head coach Keith Smart.
Memphis Grizzlies
In 2011, Pierce joined the Memphis Grizzlies as an assistant coach. He worked with head coach Lionel Hollins. He also continued to help with player development for the team.
Philadelphia 76ers
Pierce became part of the Philadelphia 76ers coaching staff before the 2013–14 season. He stayed with the team for several seasons. He became responsible for the team's defense. He also helped make important decisions during timeouts.
Atlanta Hawks Head Coach
On May 11, 2018, Lloyd Pierce was hired as the head coach for the Atlanta Hawks. He led the team for a few seasons. However, on March 1, 2021, the Hawks decided to let him go. This happened after the team had a record of 14 wins and 20 losses that season.
Indiana Pacers
After leaving the Atlanta Hawks, Pierce joined the Indiana Pacers. He was hired as the lead assistant coach for the team. He continues in this role today.
Personal Life
Lloyd Pierce earned a degree in business management from Santa Clara University. After graduating, he worked as a special education teacher. He also worked for a financial services company in Santa Clara.
He married his wife, Melissa, in 2015. They welcomed their first child in 2018. Pierce missed three games during the 2020–21 basketball season because his second child was born.
