Lluís Borrassà (born around 1360 in Girona, died around 1426 in Barcelona) was an important Catalan painter. He worked for the Crown of Aragon, which was a powerful kingdom at the time. Many people believe he brought the beautiful International Gothic painting style to Catalonia. This style was popular in Europe during the late Middle Ages.

The Life and Art of Lluís Borrassà

Lluís Borrassà learned how to paint from his father, Honorat Borrassà. We first know about him in 1380. At that time, he was part of the court of John I of Aragon, a king who liked to have famous artists around him.

Borrassà's Workshop in Barcelona

In 1390, Lluís Borrassà opened his own painting workshop in Barcelona. This workshop became the biggest in the city. It stayed the largest until about 1420. His painting style was influenced by another artist named Ferrer Bassa. In turn, Borrassà's style later influenced Bernat Martorell, who was also a well-known painter.

Famous Artworks and Altarpieces

Borrassà created many artworks, especially altarpieces. An altarpiece is a large painting or sculpture placed behind the altar in a church. His altarpieces often told stories through their pictures.

One of his altarpieces was made for the church of St. Damien. People often praised this work, but sadly, it has disappeared over time.

Other important works by Borrassà include:

Surviving Pieces and Legacy

Another notable work is a painting called "Burial of Jesus". This piece was part of the predella (the bottom part of an altarpiece) at the Collegiate Church of Santa María in Manresa. He painted this in 1408.

His last artwork that we are sure was painted by him dates from 1425. Many of his large artworks, called polyptychs (paintings with many panels), have not survived completely. Even so, Lluís Borrassà remains a very important figure in Catalan art history.
