About the Loíza Neighborhood
Where is Loíza Located?
Loíza has clear boundaries that help you find it on a map:
- To the north, it is bordered by Loíza Street. This street is a very old part of the area, dating back to the 1700s.
- To the south, you'll find the Expreso Baldorioty de Castro, which is a major highway.
- To the east, it is next to Betances and Añasco Streets.
- To the west, it is bordered by San Jorge Street.
What Does Loíza Look Like?
The way the neighborhood is set up has changed over time. A large highway, the Baldorioty de Castro freeway, was built on the south side. This highway separated Loíza from another neighborhood called Villa Palmeras. Before the highway, many streets that went south from Loíza Street continued all the way to Avenida Eduardo Conde.
Even though there are some important buildings with historical value, Loíza is mostly known for its colorful homes. Many of these homes have concrete porches in the front. Most houses are one or two stories tall. The unique style and number of these homes make Loíza a great example of traditional "Santurce" architecture, showing strong Caribbean influences. In recent years, Loíza has seen some changes as new people and businesses have moved in.
