Lo mai gai (Chinese: 糯米雞; Cantonese Yale: noh mái gāi) is a delicious dim sum dish. Its name means "glutinous rice chicken." People often eat it during a special meal called yum cha.
Sometimes, lo mai gai can be quite big. So, there's a smaller version called jan jyu gai (Chinese: 珍珠雞; Cantonese Yale: jān jyū gāi; literally "pearl chicken"). This smaller size is perfect if you want to try many different dim sum dishes!
What is Lo Mai Gai?
Lo mai gai is a popular food from southern China. It is made with sticky, sweet glutinous rice. This rice is filled with tasty ingredients.
Inside, you'll find pieces of chicken and Chinese mushrooms. It also has slices of Chinese sausage and fresh scallions. Sometimes, dried shrimp or salted egg are added too.
How Lo Mai Gai is Made
After the rice is filled, it is wrapped up. Traditionally, a dried lotus leaf is used for wrapping. The leaf gives the dish a special smell and taste.
Once wrapped, the rice ball is steamed until it's cooked through. In places like North America, people might use banana or grape leaves instead of lotus leaves.
