Local Food Hero was a fun TV competition in Britain. It aimed to find and celebrate the best small food businesses. These businesses were special because they used local ingredients. They also had strong connections to their communities.

In 2009, the competition was part of the TV show Market Kitchen. This show aired on the Good Food channel.

What was Local Food Hero?

The competition started by asking the public to nominate businesses. People voted for their favorite local food places online. Businesses from 10 different regions across the UK were part of this.

After voting, a special panel looked at the top 10 businesses from each region. They then chose three businesses from each region as finalists.

Presenters Matt Tebbutt and Matthew Fort visited these shortlisted businesses. Their visits were shown on Market Kitchen. A group of expert judges then picked one winner from each of the 10 regions. All these regional winners appeared as guests on Market Kitchen.

The big national winner for 2009 was The Dinner Ladies. They were school caterers from Wilmslow in Cheshire. They won a trophy and £5000!

In earlier years, famous chefs like Gary Rhodes, Ollie Rowe, and Rosemary Shrager hosted the show. They also helped judge the competition.

How the Competition Worked

The way the competition worked changed a little over the years.

Early Seasons (2006-2008)

In the first season, a celebrity "regional scout" visited eight businesses. They talked to the owners and tasted their food. The scout then picked their top three favorites.

These three businesses went to the regional finals. There, three main chefs and judges picked their first, second, and third place. The regional winner was chosen by combining the judges' scores and public votes.

The second season had a small change. Five finalists were chosen to go to the regional finals instead of three.

Overall Winners

  • 2006 Winner: The Letheringsett Watermill won the first season.
  • 2007 Winner: Daisy's Farm Fresh Milk was the winner in 2007.
  • 2008 Winner: Richard Ord from Colman's Fish and Chip Shop won in 2008.

The 2009 Competition

In 2009, the competition was part of the Market Kitchen show. As mentioned, The Dinner Ladies from Wilmslow won the overall national title that year.
