Gary Rhodes (born April 22, 1960 – died November 26, 2019) was a famous English chef and restaurant owner. He was well-known for his love of classic English cuisine and his unique spiked hair. Gary Rhodes starred in popular TV shows like MasterChef, MasterChef USA, and Hell's Kitchen. He also had his own cooking series, Rhodes Around Britain. Besides his restaurants, he created his own line of cookware and bread mixes. Gary Rhodes sadly passed away at age 59.

Early Life and Education
Gary Rhodes was born in Camberwell, South London, in 1960. His parents were Gordon and Jean Rhodes. His family later moved to Gillingham, Kent. Gary attended The Howard School in Rainham. After school, he went to a catering college in Thanet. This is where he met his future wife, Jennie.
Cooking Career Highlights
Gary Rhodes' first job as a chef was at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel. While in Amsterdam, he was in an accident and got seriously hurt. After recovering, he traveled around Europe, working in different kitchens. He then became a sous chef (a chef who works directly under the head chef) at the Reform Club in Pall Mall. Later, he worked at the Michelin-starred Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge.
At just 26 years old, Gary became the head chef at the Castle Hotel, Taunton, in Somerset. He helped the hotel keep its special Michelin star, which is a big award for restaurants.
In 1990, Gary Rhodes moved back to London with his family. He became the head chef at The Greenhouse restaurant in Mayfair. In 1996, The Greenhouse also earned a Michelin star.
Gary opened his first restaurant, City Rhodes, in 1997. In 1998, he opened Rhodes in the Square. Both were in London. He also partnered with a company to open Rhodes & Co restaurants in Manchester, Edinburgh, and Crawley.
In 2003, he opened Rhodes Twenty Four in Tower 42, one of London's tallest buildings. He hoped it would earn a Michelin star, which it did in 2005. This restaurant was one of his two Michelin-starred places in London until it closed in 2014.
Gary Rhodes also had restaurants on P&O cruise ships, like Arcadian Rhodes on the MS Arcadia. He also had Rhodes W1 in London and Rhodes Calabash in Grenada. He often shared his recipes in the BBC Good Food magazine.
Television Appearances
Gary Rhodes first appeared on TV when he was 27 years old on a show called Hot Chefs. This led to his own BBC series, Rhodes Around Britain, which started in 1994. He also had a Christmas special called Gary's Rhodes' Perfect Christmas in 1998.
In 1999, Gary presented Gary Rhodes' New British Classics. In this BBC show, he brought back classic British cuisine dishes. He also released a cookbook with the same name. From 2000 to 2001, Gary hosted the original MasterChef USA on PBS.

His Passing
Gary Rhodes passed away suddenly in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on November 26, 2019. He was 59 years old. His family later shared that his death was caused by a subdural haematoma, which is a type of head injury.
Many other famous chefs shared their sadness and paid tribute to Gary. Jamie Oliver said Gary was "a massive inspiration to me as a young chef." He added that Gary "reimagined modern British cuisine with elegance and fun." Tom Kerridge called Gary "one of the greatest British chefs" who helped bring British food to the world stage.
