Early Life and First Steps
Growing Up and Discovering Cooking
Tom Kerridge grew up in Gloucester, England. He is the older of two brothers. From a young age, he started cooking for himself and his younger brother after school. He enjoyed riding his bike and visiting places like Westonbirt Arboretum.
From Acting to Chef
When he was a teenager, Tom even had some small acting roles on TV! He appeared in a BBC1 show called Miss Marple in 1991. But by the age of 18, he decided that his true passion was cooking. He found a cookbook called White Heat by Marco Pierre White very inspiring. This book encouraged him to go to catering college in Cheltenham to become a professional chef.
Tom Kerridge's Cooking Journey
Starting in Professional Kitchens
Tom's first job in a professional kitchen was in 1991 at Calcot Manor in Tetbury. He then worked in several famous restaurants in London, learning from experienced chefs. He spent time at the Capital Hotel and the Stephen Bull restaurant. He worked his way up, becoming a chef de partie and then a sous chef under well-known chefs like Gary Rhodes.
Becoming a Head Chef
In 2001, Tom became a head chef for the first time at Bellamys Dining Room. He then moved to Great Fosters in Surrey. Before opening his own place, he was also head chef at Adlards in Norwich.
Opening His Own Pubs
In 2005, Tom and his wife opened their own gastropub called The Hand & Flowers in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. A gastropub is a pub that serves really high-quality food. This pub quickly earned its first Michelin star in 2006. A Michelin star is a very special award given to restaurants that offer excellent food. In 2012, The Hand & Flowers became the first pub ever to get two Michelin stars!
Tom says he chose to open a gastropub because he wanted to create a relaxed place with amazing food, rather than a very formal restaurant. One of his special dishes is his unique way of cooking pork belly, which is part of a pig roast.
More Restaurants and Awards
Tom continued to open more successful places. In 2015, his second pub in Marlow, The Coach, also won a Michelin star. He also opened The Butcher's Tap, which is a butcher shop and a pub all in one! In 2018, he opened his first London restaurant, Kerridge’s Bar & Grill, at the Corinthia Hotel London.
Tom's hard work has earned him many awards, including the AA Chefs' Chef of the Year Award and GQ's Chef of the Year award. His pub, The Hand & Flowers, has also been named the UK's top gastropub multiple times.
