The Story of Saturday Kitchen
How it Started (2002–2003)
The show first aired on January 26, 2002. It was originally an educational program for the Open University. Gregg Wallace was the first host. Each week, a famous chef joined him. They used old cooking clips from chefs like Keith Floyd and Rick Stein. The first series was pre-recorded. However, the second series was broadcast live.
New Look and New Home (2003–2006)
After its early success, the show got a new host. Famous chef Antony Worrall Thompson took over in September 2003. The show changed from simple, educational meals. It started focusing on more exciting food. More chefs, including some with Michelin stars, and celebrity guests joined. Old BBC cooking clips were still used. These clips helped the studio kitchen get ready for the next dish.
In summer 2004, the show moved to BBC One for a short time. It was called Saturday Brunch. In January 2006, Saturday Kitchen permanently moved to BBC One. This move caused some talk. It meant children's shows were moved from their usual spot.
The James Martin Years (2006–2016)
James Martin became the host in June 2006. This happened after Antony Worrall Thompson left. During James Martin's time, the number of viewers grew a lot. It went from 1.2 million to about 2.5 million. On January 9, 2010, it reached 2.7 million viewers.
On September 8, 2012, the show got a brand new studio. It had a new design. It also added real gas and running water. On February 23, 2016, James Martin announced he would leave. He wanted to focus on other things. His last show was on March 26, 2016. Matt Tebbutt and John Torode were among the chefs who filled in when Martin was away.
Saturday Kitchen Today (2016-Present)
Matt Tebbutt is the main presenter of the show now. Other chefs like Angela Hartnett and Anna Haugh sometimes host too.

What Happens on the Show
Each episode usually has a host chef and two guest chefs. They all cook dishes live in the studio. A celebrity guest also joins them. The celebrity is usually there to talk about a new project.
The guest chefs' dishes are paired with a drink. A drinks expert chooses the perfect drink. Between the live cooking segments, old clips are shown. These clips often feature chefs like Rick Stein and Keith Floyd. Sometimes, clips from James Martin or The Hairy Bikers are shown too.
Heaven or Hell
The show ends with a fun game called "Heaven or Hell." The host and guest chefs cook a dish for the celebrity guest. This dish uses either their favorite or least-favorite ingredient. Viewers at home vote online to choose if it's "heaven" (favorite) or "hell" (least favorite). In the past, only viewers who called in could vote.
