Early Life and Cooking Start
Marco Pierre White was born in Leeds, England, on 11 December 1961. His mother, Maria-Rosa Gallina, was from Italy. His father, Frank White, was also a chef. Marco was the third of four sons.
He left school without any special qualifications. He decided to follow in his father's footsteps and become a chef.
Marco first trained at the Hotel St George in Harrogate. He also worked at the Box Tree in Ilkley. In 1981, he moved to London. He started his training with famous chefs Albert Roux and Michel Roux at Le Gavroche. He also trained with other top chefs like Pierre Koffman and Raymond Blanc.
Becoming a Star Chef
In 1987, Marco Pierre White opened his own restaurant called Harveys in London. He quickly won his first Michelin star there. Just one year later, he earned his second star. This was a huge achievement for a young chef.
Many talented chefs worked for him at Harveys. These included Gordon Ramsay and Phil Howard.
Later, he became the head chef at The Restaurant Marco Pierre White. This restaurant was in the Hyde Park Hotel. Here, he earned his third Michelin star. This made him one of the most celebrated chefs in the world.
In 1994, Marco Pierre White became the youngest chef to get three Michelin stars. He was only 33 years old. This record was later broken by Massimiliano Alajmo in 2002.
After working very hard for 17 years, Marco decided to retire from cooking. He felt that his career, despite all the fame, was not giving him enough personal happiness. So, in 1999, he gave back his Michelin stars.
Life After the Kitchen
Marco Pierre White announced he was leaving the kitchen in 1999. He cooked his last meal for a customer on 23 December. After this, he became a restaurateur. This means he owned and managed restaurants, but didn't cook in them every day.
In 2008, he opened his first steakhouse in London. It was called "MPW Steak & Alehouse." He later opened more restaurants with different styles. These included the London Steakhouse Co. and Wheeler's Fish & Chips.
He also owned a 17th-century pub called the Yew Tree Inn. This pub was featured in his TV show, "Marco's Great British Feast."
Marco has worked with businessman Nick Taplin. Together, they launched a company called Black And White Hospitality. This company helps other property owners open Marco Pierre White-branded restaurants. There are now many different types of his restaurants.
