History
How the Sugar Business Started

Tate & Lyle's old sugar factory in Silvertown, London
In 1859, a man named Henry Tate owned many grocery stores. He sold his stores and joined a sugar factory in Liverpool. In 1869, Tate started his own company called Henry Tate & Sons with his two sons. They opened a new sugar factory in Liverpool in 1872.
In 1875, Henry Tate got special rights to make sugar cubes in Britain. These sugar cubes were first made in Switzerland and Germany. Tate was the first to bring them to the UK. In 1878, his company opened another big factory in Silvertown, East London.
At the same time, another man named Abram Lyle was also in the sugar business. He bought a share in a sugar factory in Scotland in 1865. In 1883, Lyle started his own factory, Abram Lyle & Sons, in London. It was very close to Henry Tate's factory. The two men were big business rivals, but they never met.
The Famous Golden Syrup
After opening his factory, Abram Lyle's Golden Syrup became very popular. His company was soon selling a lot of it every week. In 1888, Lyle's Golden Syrup got a special logo. It showed a dead lion with a swarm of bees around it. This picture came from a story in the Bible. The logo also had the words "out of the strong came forth sweetness."
This logo is very famous. It holds a Guinness World Record for being the oldest unchanged brand packaging in the world. In 2024, the company changed the logo for most products. But the original logo stayed on the Lyle's Golden Syrup tins.
The Companies Join Forces
Abram Lyle passed away in 1891, and Henry Tate died in 1899. Their sons continued to run their companies. Henry Tate's company officially became Henry Tate & Sons (1903) Limited in 1903.
In 1921, the two rival sugar companies decided to merge. They became one company called Tate & Lyle, Limited. At that time, this new company refined about half of all the sugar in the UK. In 1949, the company used a character called "Mr Cube" in its advertising. This was part of a campaign to stop the government from taking over the company.
Changing What They Do
From 1973, being part of the European Economic Community made things harder for Tate & Lyle's sugar business. New rules meant that sugar beet grown in Europe was favored over sugar imported from other countries. So, Tate & Lyle started to make other things. They began to trade other goods, transport products, and work in engineering. In 1976, they bought another sugar company called Manbré & Garton.
In 1976, Tate & Lyle bought a part of Amylum. This was a European company that made products from starch. They bought more of Amylum in 1988. In 1988, Tate & Lyle also bought a large part of A. E. Staley, a US company that processed corn. In 1998, they bought Haarmann & Reimer, which made citric acid. By 2000, they owned all of Amylum and A. E. Staley.
In 2004, Tate & Lyle started a joint project with DuPont. They worked together to make Bio-PDO. This is a product made from plants that is used to create a fabric called Sorona. In 2005, they formed a new company together called DuPont Tate & Lyle BioProducts.

In 2008, Tate & Lyle announced that its white cane sugar would be certified as a Fairtrade product. This means farmers get a fair price for their sugar. Other products followed in 2009. In 2009, a court ruled that Chinese companies could make copies of Tate & Lyle's Splenda product.
In 2021, Tate & Lyle was ranked fourth among companies that make modified starch for food. In May 2022, Tate & Lyle bought Nutriati. This company makes protein and flour from chickpeas.
Selling the Sugar Business
In July 2010, Tate & Lyle announced they would sell their sugar business. This included the right to use the Tate & Lyle brand name and Lyle's Golden Syrup. They sold it to American Sugar Refining for £211 million. The sale included the Plaistow Wharf and Silvertown factories. The new owners promised that no jobs would be lost.
What Happened Recently
In 2012, a book called The Sugar Girls was published. It told the true stories of women who worked at Tate & Lyle's factories in London from the 1940s to the 1960s. Another book, The Sugar Girls of Love Lane, came out in 2024. It was about the women who worked at the Liverpool factory.
Nick Hampton became the CEO of Tate & Lyle on April 1, 2018.
Tate & Lyle has found a way to make a natural sweetener called allulose. In August 2019, the company wanted to use a new rule from the US Food and Drug Administration. This rule meant they didn't have to list allulose as a total sugar or added sugar in food ingredients.
In July 2021, Tate & Lyle announced it was separating its Primary Products business. This part of the company used to be A. E. Staley. It became a new company called Primary Products Ingredients Americas LLC (Primient). Tate & Lyle still owns half of Primient. The other half is owned by KPS Capital Partners. This deal was finished in April 2022.
