Loch Achall is a beautiful freshwater loch (which is the Scottish word for lake). It's located in the Highlands of Scotland, about 3 kilometers (about 2 miles) northeast of a town called Ullapool. In the Gaelic language, its name is Loch Ach a' Challa, which means "loch of the hazel field."

This loch is a peaceful spot surrounded by stunning Scottish scenery. It's a great example of the natural beauty you can find in this part of the world.

Exploring Loch Achall's Geography

Loch Achall is a long and narrow loch. At its widest point, it stretches about 579 meters (about 1,900 feet) across. Imagine walking from one side to the other – it would take a little while!

Surrounding Hills and Mountains

The loch is nestled among some impressive hills. To the south, you'll see Beinn Eilideach, a hill that stands tall at about 559 meters (1,833 feet). To the northeast, there's another peak called Meall Liath Choire, which is about 549 meters (1,801 feet) high. These hills make the area around Loch Achall feel very grand and wild.

Rivers Flowing In and Out

Several rivers help keep Loch Achall full of fresh water. The Rivers Rhidorroch and Allt a'Ghiubhais flow into the loch. From its western end, the Ullapool River flows out. This river then makes its way towards a larger body of water called Loch Broom, eventually reaching the sea.
