Loch Mealt is a freshwater loch (which is the Scottish word for a lake) on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It is located near the villages of Ellishadder and Staffin. You can find it on the eastern side of the Trotternish peninsula.
About Loch Mealt
This loch is shaped roughly like a square and is about 1 km (0.6 miles) long. It sits very close to the sea.
Kilt Rock and Waterfall
On the eastern side of Loch Mealt, you'll find the amazing sea-cliffs called Kilt Rock. These cliffs are about 55 metres (180 ft) (180 feet) tall! They are made of a type of rock called dolerite, which has many different colored layers.
A beautiful waterfall flows from Loch Mealt right over Kilt Rock and into the sea. It's a very popular spot for visitors to see.
Wildlife of Loch Mealt
Loch Mealt is home to many different kinds of birds. You can often see greylag geese living there all the time. Diving ducks also enjoy swimming and feeding in its waters.
The Orkney Charr
A special type of fish called the Orkney charr (Salvelinus inframundus) has been found in Loch Mealt. This fish is a kind of char, which is related to salmon and trout. Scientists are still studying this fish to learn more about it.
