Loch Monzievaird is a beautiful freshwater lake, known as a 'loch' in Scotland. You can find it in the area called Perthshire. Its Scottish Gaelic name is Loch Moighidh a' Bhàird.

History of Loch Monzievaird

Loch Monzievaird has a long and interesting history. Many important events happened here centuries ago.

Ancient Battles and Kings

A long time ago, in the year 1005, King Kenneth III of Scotland was killed near here. This happened during a battle at a place called Monzievaird.

Castle Cluggy: An Old Fortress

On the north side of the loch, you can find the remains of an old fortress. It is called Castle Cluggy. This castle was the first home of the lairds of Ochtertyre. A laird was like a lord or landowner in Scotland.

Records from 1467 already called this fortress 'ancient'. This means it was very old even back then! Castle Cluggy once belonged to a powerful person named Red Comyn.

Red Comyn and Robert the Bruce

Red Comyn was a Scottish nobleman. He was killed in 1306 by Robert the Bruce. This happened in a church building in Dumfries. Robert the Bruce later became a famous King of Scotland.

It is believed that Sir William Murray, 1st Baronet of Ochtertyre, was the last person to live in Castle Cluggy. He lived there in the mid-1600s.

Island Prison and Burial Mound

Near the castle ruins, there is a small island. This island was not natural; it was built by people. It was used as a prison a long time ago.

At the western end of the loch, there is a large mound of earth. This mound was used as a burial site. People who died from the plague were buried there during the time of King Charles I.

Location and Nearby Towns

Loch Monzievaird is in a very popular holiday area of Scotland. It is in Highland Perthshire.

Finding the Loch

The loch is located about two miles west of a town called Crieff. Many other interesting towns are easy to reach from Loch Monzievaird by car. These include Aberfeldy, Dunkeld, Perth, and Pitlochry.

Day Trips to Cities

Larger cities like St Andrews, Dundee, Glasgow, and Edinburgh are also not far away. You can usually drive to these cities in about an hour. This makes Loch Monzievaird a great spot for exploring more of Scotland.
