Loch Ossian is a beautiful, long, and narrow freshwater loch (the Scottish word for a lake). It is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) long. You can find it on the edge of Rannoch Moor in Scotland.
The loch is part of The Corrour Estate. Its western end is about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) east of Corrour railway station. The River Ossian flows out of the loch, heading north. This river eventually joins the River Spean.
Getting to Loch Ossian
Loch Ossian is quite a remote place. This means it's far away from busy public roads. The easiest way to reach it is by train, getting off at Corrour railway station. This station is known for being one of the most remote in the United Kingdom!
Staying at the Loch
Right on the banks of Loch Ossian, near its western end, you'll find the Loch Ossian youth hostel. This hostel is a great place for young people and families to stay. It belongs to the Scottish Youth Hostels Association (SYHA).
The Eco-Hostel
The Loch Ossian youth hostel was recently updated. It is now an 'eco-hostel'. This means it uses environmentally friendly systems. For example, it gets its power from wind and solar energy. It also has special systems for recycling water and using dry toilets. These features help protect the natural environment around the loch.
Corrour Lodge
At the eastern end of Loch Ossian, there is a large building called Corrour Lodge. This historic lodge adds to the unique feel of the area.
