Lodewijk Elzevir (born around 1540 – died 1617) was a very important printer and bookbinder. He was born in Leuven, a city that is now part of Belgium. Lodewijk started a famous company called the House of Elzevir.

This company printed many important books. One of the most famous was "Two New Sciences" by Galileo. At that time, some of Galileo's ideas were not allowed because of religious reasons. The House of Elzevir helped share these important scientific works. The original company stopped printing in 1712. However, a modern company called Elsevier was started in 1880. It was named after Lodewijk's historic publishing house.

Lodewijk's Life and Work

Lodewijk Elzevir began his career as a bookbinder. This means he put books together at a printing shop in Antwerp. He married Maijke de Verdeijen Verbois in 1563. His first two sons were born in Antwerp.

He moved to different cities over the years. First, he went to Wesel, then to Douai. Finally, he settled in Leiden before 1580.

Starting the Printing Business

Lodewijk printed his very first book in Leiden in 1583. His business became very successful. His family members continued to run the printing house until 1791.

The Elzevir printing house was key in sharing important science books. Unlike other printers, Lodewijk focused on making strong books. His books were easy to read, not just fancy. They were often smaller with narrow edges. Most of the books were printed in Latin.

Family Carrying On the Business

Lodewijk's sons and grandsons helped grow the business. His oldest son, Matthijs, and his sixth son, Bonaventure Elzevir, continued his work. His grandsons, Abraham and Isaac Elzevir, also expanded the company.

A different Lodewijk Elzevir, who was this Lodewijk's grandson, famously met Galileo in 1636. This shows how important the Elzevir family became in the world of books and science.
