Lojze Krakar (born February 21, 1926 – died December 24, 1995) was a famous Slovene writer. He was a talented poet, a skilled translator, and an editor. He also studied the history of literature and wrote essays. What's really cool is that he wrote poetry especially for children!

Who Was Lojze Krakar?

Lojze Krakar was born in a place called Semič in White Carniola, Slovenia, in 1926. He loved learning about languages and books. He studied Slavic languages and literature at the University of Ljubljana. He finished his studies in 1954.

Later, he even got a special degree, a doctorate, from the Frankfurt Goethe University in Germany in 1970. Throughout his life, he worked as a teacher, helped publish books as an editor, and translated many works from other languages into Slovene.

Awards and Recognition

Lojze Krakar was recognized for his amazing writing. In 1963, he won the Prešeren Foundation Award. This was for his poetry collection called Cvet pelina, which means The Flower of the Woodworm.

He received another big honor in 1977, the Grand Prešeren Award. This was for his poetry collection Nekje tam čisto na robu, meaning Somewhere There Right on the Edge.

Lojze Krakar also won the Levstik Award twice, which is a special award for children's literature. In 1962, he won it for his book of poetry for children, Sonce v knjigi (The Sun in a Book). Then, in 1991, he won it again for his story in verse, Prišel je lev (The Lion Arrived).
