Lokoya is a small, quiet place in Napa County, California, United States. It's an unincorporated area, which means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. Lokoya sits high up at about 1,765 feet (538 meters) above sea level. You can find it about 9 miles (14 km) northwest of the city of Napa. The name Lokoya comes from the Miwok language, Lakáa-yomi, which means "place of the cottonwood."

A Look Back: Lokoya's History

Lokoya has had a few different names over the years. It was once known as Solid Comfort and also Johannesburg.

Post Office and Resort Days

A post office opened in Lokoya in 1918, when it was still called Solid Comfort. In 1925, its name officially changed to Lokoya. This post office helped people send and receive mail until it closed in 1951.

In the early 1900s, Lokoya was a popular spot for a special kind of vacation place called a resort. People would travel to this resort, which was located on the slopes of Mount Veeder. Guests would take a train to Oakville. From there, they would travel the last seven miles to Lokoya by a horse-drawn carriage called a stagecoach. It was a long journey, but the beautiful scenery made it worthwhile.

Nearby Historic Sites
