Oakville is a small community in the Napa Valley area of Napa County, located in northern California. It's known as a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means it's a special area counted by the government for population data.

In 1993, Oakville was officially recognized as a special wine-growing area called an "appellation" within the larger Napa Valley AVA. Today, there are 24 wineries and over 5,000 acres (20 km2) of vineyards in the Oakville AVA. Famous wineries like Robert Mondavi Winery and Opus One Winery are found here.

History of Oakville

Oakville began in the 1860s as a simple stop for a steam train. This train was owned by The Napa Valley Railroad Company. It was started by Samuel Brannan in 1864. The train carried tourists from Vallejo to the resort town of Calistoga. The village got its name from the many dark green valley oak trees in the area.

How Wine Came to Oakville

H. W. Crabb helped turn Oakville into a wine region. In 1868, he bought 240 acres (0.97 km2) near the Napa River. Crabb started a vineyard and a winery called To Kalon. This name means "the beautiful" in Greek. By 1877, Crabb had planted 130 acres (0.53 km2) of grapes. He was making 50,000 gallons of wine each year. By 1880, his vineyard grew to 430 acres (1.7 km2).

In 1903, the U.S. Department of Agriculture opened an experimental vineyard in Oakville. This vineyard, known as "Oakville Station," is now run by the University of California, Davis.

Modern Wine Production

Oakville was officially named a special wine area in 1993. There are now 24 wineries and over 5,000 acres (20 km2) of vineyards here. The Robert Mondavi Winery is located between Oakville and Rutherford, California. To Kalon was part of Mondavi's land when he started his winery in 1965. Another famous winery in Oakville is Opus One Winery. Heitz Wine Cellars' Martha's Vineyard is also in the Oakville area.

Today, many tourists visit Oakville. They often stop at Oakville Grocery to buy picnic supplies. This is one of the few businesses in the area that isn't a winery. The Napa Valley Wine Train still runs through Oakville. It uses the same route as the old steam train from the 1800s.
