History of Rutherford

Rutherford is located on land that was once a large Mexican land grant. This grant was called Rancho Caymus. It covered about 11,887 acres. In 1838, General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo gave this land to an early settler named George C. Yount.

The Rutherford Family's Influence

In 1864, George C. Yount gave 1,040 acres of this land to his granddaughter Elizabeth. It was a wedding gift for her and her husband, Thomas Rutherford. The Rutherford family started planting vineyards on their land. They also began making wine in the late 1800s. This is how the area got its name.
