Lomax was named after a person named R.A. Lomax. He came from Illinois in 1885. Mr. Lomax was very generous. He gave land to help start a school for the community.

Lomax officially became its own town in 1952. It then became a city in 1966. However, in 1980, Lomax joined with the larger city of La Porte. It is now a neighborhood within La Porte.
