Lomo is a small, quiet place in Butte County, California. It's what we call an "unincorporated community," which means it's a group of homes or buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. The name "Lomo" comes from the Spanish word for 'Hill', which makes sense because it's located at an elevation of 3,779 feet (1,152 meters). You can find Lomo about 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) from Butte Meadows.

What is Lomo?

Lomo is a small area where people live, but it doesn't have a mayor or a city council like a regular town. Instead, it's part of the larger Butte County and gets its services from the county government. It's nestled in the beautiful natural landscape of California, surrounded by forests.

A Glimpse into Lomo's Past

Lomo has a fascinating history, even though it's a quiet place today. It was once a much busier spot!

Early Days: Wakefields Station

Back in 1864, a man named Henry Wakefield set up a homestead in the area. His place became known as Wakefields Station. It was an important stop for travelers and stagecoaches (like old-fashioned buses pulled by horses) on the Humboldt Wagon Road. Imagine how busy it must have been with people stopping to rest, get supplies, and change horses!

From 1878 to 1881, Lomo even had its own post office, which shows it was a recognized community where people lived and sent mail.

Busy Times in Lomo

In its heyday, Lomo was more than just a stop on a road. It had several important buildings that served the community:

  • A lumber mill, which would have been busy cutting wood from the surrounding forests.
  • A school, where children in the area could get an education.
  • A hotel, providing a place for travelers and workers to stay.

Sadly, the hotel faced some bad luck. It burned down not once, but twice! First in 1882, and then again in 1885. After these fires, Lomo slowly became less busy.

Lomo Today

Today, Lomo is much quieter than it used to be. It's mainly an intersection of roads with just a few homes scattered in the surrounding forest. While it might not have a bustling hotel or a busy lumber mill anymore, it remains a part of California's rich history, reminding us of the days when wagon roads and small stations were vital for travel and community life.
