A Notable Event: The 1969 Plane Collision
On September 9, 1969, an important event happened near London. A large passenger plane, Allegheny Airlines Flight 853, was flying towards Indianapolis. While it was getting ready to land, it accidentally collided with a smaller plane called a Piper Cherokee.
This mid-air collision happened over Fairland, Indiana, which is also in Shelby County. The larger plane, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-31, crashed into a cornfield close to London. Sadly, everyone on both planes lost their lives. This included 78 passengers and 4 crew members on the larger plane, and the student pilot of the smaller plane.
