Early Days of Lone Oak
In the mid-1920s, a man named G. M. Smith moved his family to what is now Lone Oak. They came from the city of San Antonio. Mr. Smith rented a building for just $10 a month. He set up his home in the back and opened a store in the front.
A Store and a Sheriff
Mr. Smith's business grew quickly. He later built a new store and a house on a corner lot. His store was called "G M SMITH." But people started calling the area "Lone Oak" because of the famous large tree.
G. M. Smith was also a deputy sheriff. He once stopped two highway workers who had found Spanish gold. They were trying to take the gold across the Mexico border. This happened while they were working on Highway 87.
The Smith family lived in Lone Oak until the early 1940s. Their two children went to Adken and Sawyer schools. They later graduated from Brackenridge High School, which was about 18 miles away. In the mid-1940s, Mr. Smith and his wife bought a business called Barbee Hatchery in Yorktown, Texas. They ran a successful poultry business there until the late 1970s.
