History of St. Hedwig
How St. Hedwig Was Founded
The town of St. Hedwig was started in 1852 by a man named John Demmer. He moved to the area from his home in Silesia, which is now part of Poland.
In 1856, four more families from Silesia came to the area. They built the first Catholic Church there, called Annunciation. This church was part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Antonio.
Naming the Town
In 1860, a post office opened in the town. It was first called Cottage Hill. Later, its name was changed to St. Hedwig. This new name honored Hedwig of Silesia, who was the patron saint of Silesia. A patron saint is like a special protector for a place or group of people.
By 1868, the community had built a strong stone church. By 1897, about 200 families lived in the town. Most of these families had roots in Poland and Germany. Even today, many people in St. Hedwig can trace their family history back to these countries.
