Long Bay is a suburb located on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand. It's one of the northernmost areas of the city.

The beautiful coastline here is part of the Long Bay Regional Park. This park is a special place where nature is protected. The shoreline is also part of the Long Bay-Okura Marine Reserve, which was set up in 1995. This means the sea and its creatures are also protected. The beach at Long Bay is sandy and safe for swimming. You can also enjoy forest walks and see amazing cliffs.

At the northern end of the beach, you'll find the Vaughan Homestead. This is an old, historic house that tells stories of the past. It's open to the public every two weeks.

History of Long Bay

Long Bay was once known as Te Oneroa. A small Māori community from the Ngāti Kahu tribe lived here until the 1850s.

In 1862, the Vaughan family bought a large piece of land, about 600 hectares (that's like 1,500 acres!). They used this land to farm sheep. The family continued farming until 1965. Then, they sold their land to the Auckland Regional Council. This land became what we now know as the Long Bay Regional Park.

During the Second World War, a special structure called a gun emplacement was built on the coast north of the park. This was to help defend against any possible attacks. You can still see parts of this old structure today.

More recently, in 2008, a court decision helped protect some farmland above the park from being built on. However, since 2014, there has been a lot of new housing built in Long Bay. This development is part of Auckland Council's plan for the area.
