Scientific classification

The longjawed galaxias (Galaxias prognathus) is a special type of freshwater fish. It belongs to a family of fish called galaxiids. This fish is quite rare and can only be found in the South Island of New Zealand.

It lives in rivers and streams that are high up in the mountains. These areas are on the eastern side of the Southern Alps. The longjawed galaxias can grow to be about 9 centimeters long. That's about the length of a small pencil!

What the Longjawed Galaxias Looks Like

This fish has a long, thin body. Its skin is thick and leathery, and it doesn't have any scales. Instead, it's covered in a slimy layer of mucus. This helps protect its skin.

The longjawed galaxias has spots and bands on its body. These marks are usually shades of brown and grey. This helps it blend in with its surroundings in the river.

Fins and Jaws

It has a single dorsal fin on its back. It also has an anal fin on its underside. Both of these fins are located about two-thirds of the way down its body.

One of the most interesting things about this fish is its jaw. Its lower jaw sticks out further than its upper jaw. This unique feature is why it's called the "longjawed" galaxias!

Where it Lives

The longjawed galaxias is only found in New Zealand. It lives in the cool, clear waters of rivers and streams. These waterways are often at higher elevations in the mountains.

It prefers the eastern side of the Southern Alps. This makes it a very special fish. It is found nowhere else in the world!

Conservation Status

The longjawed galaxias is considered a critically endangered species. This means it faces a very high risk of disappearing forever. Scientists and conservationists are working to protect this unique fish. They want to make sure it can survive in its natural home.
