The Isodendrion longifolium, also known as the longleaf isodendrion or aupaka, is a very special and rare flowering plant. It belongs to the violet family. This unique plant is only found in Hawaii, on the islands of Kauai and Oahu. Because it is so rare, the United States government protects it as a threatened species.

What is the Aupaka?

The aupaka is a type of shrub. It usually grows to be about 0.6 to 2 meters tall, which is roughly the height of a person.

What Does it Look Like?

This plant has long, lance-shaped leaves. These leaves can be up to 30 centimeters long, which is about the length of a ruler. They feel a bit leathery to the touch. The aupaka also produces beautiful purple flowers. These flowers are known for their lovely smell.

Where Does it Live?

The aupaka prefers to grow in moist and wet forest areas. It needs a lot of water to thrive. Sadly, there are not many of these plants left. On the island of Oahu, fewer than 50 individual plants remain. On Kauai, there are a few more, but the plant is still very rare overall. In total, there are fewer than 1000 aupaka plants left in the world.

Why is the Aupaka Special?

The aupaka is special because it is endemic to Hawaii. This means it naturally grows nowhere else in the entire world. It is a unique part of Hawaii's natural environment.

Protecting the Aupaka

The aupaka faces several challenges that make it hard for the plant to survive. One big problem is wild animals, like wild boars. These animals, which are called ungulates, can damage the plants and their habitat. Another threat comes from non-native plant species. These are plants that were brought to Hawaii from other places. They compete with the aupaka for sunlight, water, and space, making it harder for the native plant to grow and spread. Because of these threats, scientists and conservationists are working hard to protect the aupaka and its home.
