Lonsdale is a historic village in Lincoln and Cumberland, Rhode Island. It is located in Providence County, near major roads like Rhode Island Route 146 and Route 95. This area was first settled by William Blaxton in 1635.

For many years, Lonsdale was an important center for manufacturing. It was home to large textile mills, including the Lonsdale Company's Bleachery and the Ann & Hope mill. These mills played a big role in the village's history and growth.

Exploring the Lonsdale Historic District

The Lonsdale Historic District is a special area that protects many buildings connected to the village's mill history. It includes homes where mill workers lived, found on streets like Front, John, Lonsdale, and Main Streets in Lincoln. It also covers the Ann & Hope factory complex and other worker housing areas in Cumberland. This district helps us remember and learn about Lonsdale's past.

The 1922 Textile Strike

In 1922, the textile mills in Lonsdale faced a big challenge. Workers went on strike as part of the 1922 New England Textile Strike. This happened because mill owners wanted to cut wages and make people work longer hours.

The strike caused the mills to close temporarily. On July 10, some families who lived in homes owned by the mill had to leave. This event showed how difficult times could be for workers and their families during that period.
